Why Have Plastic Free July?

Happy July! And July is the month we all try and reduce our plastic consumption, in case you didn't know. Someone decided to name it "Plastic Free July". Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue as well as "Movember", but hey.

So why do we have plastic free July? Well, I have no idea really. Probably some eco freak like me came up with it to encourage people to save the world. Maybe there are some people out there that actually have no clue that plastic is BAD and we need to raise awareness about it.

What should you do for Plastic Free July?

Well, it doesn't take a scientist to figure out the idea behind Plastic Free July. But there is more you can do than just avoiding putting plastic in the rubbish. The idea is to avoid plastic altogether. Avoid buying products that are made of plastic, including clothes that are made from plastic, like polyester. Yes, polyester is a plastic. Boycott companies that use plastics or are wasteful. Ditch your plastic bin liner, you can totally do without it. Replace your plastic toothbrush with a bamboo one.

Hey, why not make it a goal to not even touch anything plastic?! Ok, maybe that's a bit over the top. Don't go replacing anything in your house that is perfectly usable just because it is plastic. I mean, I am still using plastic pegs until they all run out and I replace them with metal ones. There is no reason to throw something perfectly usable in the rubbish. Even if you do need to get rid of some plastic stuff, think about how you could repurpose it before you throw it in the rubbish.

And you know what, if you haven't started to get rid of plastics in your life yet, maybe this will start the ball rolling for you. Don't think of it as Plastic Free July, think of it as the start of your journey to eventually eliminating all plastics from your life.
